I recall the very first couple of occasions the former occurred to me. I read Wally Lamb’s SHE’S COME UNDONE. I read it since the title, taken from a song an old boyfriend as soon as devoted to me (not that I ought to boast about that) resonated for me. And I was so engrossed in and enthralled by the book, particularly simply because it’s written by a man however the central figure is really a girl who’s so brilliantly depicted, that I wrote an anonymous thank you to Lamb—in care of his publisher.
